Tooth Extraction Process
The tooth extraction process is a carefully orchestrated procedure performed by our skilled dental team. Before the extraction, we will conduct a comprehensive examination and review your dental and medical history to ensure your safety throughout the procedure. During your tooth extraction, your dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the extraction site. Once the area is numb, your dentist will carefully loosen and remove your tooth. In some cases, a small incision may be necessary to make extraction easier.
Following your tooth extraction, your dental care team at Dousman Dental will provide you with post-operative instructions and guidelines for pain management, oral hygiene and diet to promote proper healing and a smooth recovery process.
Recovering From a Tooth Extraction
You may experience some swelling, discomfort or mild bleeding immediately after the procedure, which is normal. After your tooth extraction, be sure to follow the tooth extraction recovery instructions provided by your care team diligently to optimize healing and minimize your risk of complications.
Adhere to your prescribed pain medication, maintain good oral hygiene by gently brushing and flossing and follow a soft food diet during your initial healing period.
If you have any concerns or questions during the recovery period, our team is always available to provide you with guidance and support.
Normal Socket After a Tooth Removal
After a tooth extraction, you will notice a "socket" or an empty space where your tooth used to be. A healthy socket will look like a hole with a blood clot in it. Blood clots look like a dark-colored scab. This socket will gradually fill in with soft tissue, and, in the case of an extracted baby tooth, an adult tooth over time. It is normal to observe some minor bleeding, discomfort or swelling in the area immediately after the extraction.
An unhealthy socket is called a dry socket. A dry socket, which can be painful, will look dry and have a creamy white coloring.
Should you have any concerns about the healing process, and if you develop a dry socket, call us. We are here to address your questions and ensure your recovery is on track.
