Periodontal Exams near Waukesha
Dousman Family Dentistry offers a range of services to help with the prevention of tooth loss and decay. One of the best ways to catch gum disease before it’s too late is biannual periodontal disease evaluations. If our dentists catch early signs of periodontal disease, we can put together an early treatment plan to improve the outcome of your oral health. It’s also much less invasive to treat the early stages of the disease than advanced periodontitis.
It’s recommended to get a periodontal screening twice yearly, so it's simple to have an evaluation done during your regular teeth cleaning appointment. We can easily identify gum disease with simple in-office screenings. We inspect your gums to see if they’re red, puffy or have receded and begun to form pockets. Sometimes we use x-rays to see if the bone structure beneath your gums has deteriorated at all.
Gum Disease is the Leading Cause of Tooth Loss
Gum disease occurs when bacteria accumulate along and beneath your gum line. Your gums become inflamed and sore and may bleed easily. If gum disease goes untreated, it can infect your gum tissue and underlying bone. This can cause gum recession, bone deterioration, and tooth loss. Contact your dentist if you notice any signs or symptoms of periodontal disease such as:
- Tender gums
- Changes in your bite
- Loose teeth
- Bad breath
- Sensitive teeth
Periodontal Disease Treatment Options
If you’re past the point of no return with your deteriorating gum health, we offer dental procedures that will restore your smile back to new.
If you have already experienced some tooth loss, you can schedule an appointment for dentures, implants, or TMJ therapy based on an evaluation of your current oral health. It is not recommended to have your teeth whitened if you have periodontal disease since it can do more damage to your inflamed gums.
Scheduling routine cleanings/checkups and maintaining good oral hygiene are the best things you can do to keep your gums healthy and prevent flare-ups of periodontal disease.
Periodontal Disease Screening Cost
You can expect a periodontal disease exam to cost between $140 and $300 without insurance. Dousman offers flexible payment plans so that paying for your dental services is made easier. We also accept a wide variety of insurances including AARP, Delta, Humana, and Anthem, among others.
Periodontal Disease Risk Factors
You may be at a higher risk for periodontitis if you smoke, use certain medications, have diabetes, AIDS, or cancer, or have genetic factors that make you more susceptible to gum disease.
