The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull. This joint can be found on either side of your head, just in front of your ears. Your TMJ allows your jaw to open and close enabling you to speak and eat.

TMJ is often referred to synonymously with TMJD (TMJ disorders). According to the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research, 10 million Americans suffer from TMJD. These disorders are more common among women than men. No matter how minimal or severe your experience with TMJD is, we'll work efficiently to find you relief.

What does TMJ pain feel like?

TMJ SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

  • Pain in the face or neck
  • Stiffness in jaw muscles
  • Limited jaw movement
  • Jaw locking
  • Sleep apnea
  • Clicking or popping noise from TMJ site
  • Shift in jaw, changing the way the upper and lower teeth align (this is called malocclusion).

If you’re living with a TMJ disorder, you may experience:

  • tenderness at the joint
  • facial pain
  • difficulty moving the joint

TMJ symptoms are uncomfortable, and while some symptoms may come and go or disappear on their own, visiting a TMJ specialist is the most effective way to relieve your symptoms. If you're experiencing a dental emergencycontact our office right away.

What is the main cause of TMJD?

HEALTH CONDITIONS, INCLUDING:

  • Arthritis
  • Erosion of the joint
  • Habitually grinding or clenching teeth
  • Structural jaw problems present at birth
  • Trauma to the jaw or joint

Factors associated but not proven to cause TMJ, including:

  • Use of orthodontic braces
  • Poor posture that strains the muscles of the neck and face
  • Prolonged stress
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of sleep

How can I fix TMJ permanently?

TMJ treatments depending on your specific case, include:

  • TMJ exercises to strengthen jaw muscles
  • Medications like muscle relaxants, analgesics, anti-anxiety drugs or anti-inflammatory medications
  • A night guard or bite plate to decrease clenching or teeth grinding

Do you go to a doctor or dentist for TMJD?

A doctor will refer you to a dentist or an EMD to treat TMJ disorders. We will recommend the best treatment plan for your specific case.

How much does it cost to fix TMJ disorders?

The specific cost of your TMJ treatment can depend on several factors, including:

  • Cause of your TMJ disorder(s)
  • Extent of damage done
  • Level of misalignment
  • TMJ symptoms you’re experiencing

If your TMJD is being treated with orthodontics, meaning artificial devices like splints and braces, your TMJ treatment may cost up to $5,000. A full mouth reconstruction TMJ treatment costs between $40,000 and $50,000.

Your TMJ treatment may be covered by insurance depending on your specific case. Some insurance companies consider jaw surgeries medically necessary if the disorder is causing sleep apnea disorder, breathing issues and/or severe speech impediments. Orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery) is cosmetic, so the procedure is elective.

Dousman Family Dentistry accepts most major insurances, including Care Credit. You can check our list of accepted insurances online. If you don’t have dental insurance, we’ll work with you to create an affordable payment plan.
